Quick Tour of Google's Search Algorithms

Google has 90% of the search engine market share worldwide. Mobile traffic is almost completely controlled by this internet giant. Internet users make more than 2 trillion Google searches every year.

Each user has repeatedly turned to this search service. Google's impact on the life of modern society cannot be overstated. This article covers the major updates to Google search algorithms.
Panda
The main idea of Panda is that original sites with author's content occupy higher positions in the search engine. Thus, pages that repeat information from other sites or are simply copies of the latter are ranked lower. This update introduced new criteria for managing search quality:
- amount of information on the page (measured in words);
- originality of the text;
- spelling and grammatical correctness of the text.

Page Layout (Top Heavy)
This update penalizes sites that are oversaturated with ads at the top of the page or greatly distract from the main information. The update premiered in January 2012.
Penguin
The algorithm was created with the aim of effectively combating search spam up to the exclusion of sites that abuse advertising from the search ranking.
Pirate
The main idea of the update is to lower the ranking of sites that violate copyright and intellectual property. To do this, the company uses the system of requests for copyright infringement (Digital Millenium Copyright Act). Copyright holders can use the tool to report and remove plagiarized site content from Google's database.
Exact Match Domain(EMD)
Sites with domains created specifically for the Google Display System (such as MFA) are blocked or significantly degraded in rank. The user cannot get the necessary information due to the fact that there is nothing on the page except advertising. This aims to combat MFA-like domains.
Payday Loan
The purpose of the update is to reduce the number of pages that contain spam requests. For example, when you request to buy a car, the search result will contain 2-3 pages where you can directly buy a car, 2-5 sites of manufacturing companies and several sites on how to choose a car. Without Payday Loan update, you would see 20-30 queries about the only one topic.
Hummingbird
Significant transformation of the search algorithm comes with the Hummingbird version. Panda and Penguin, as major and successful updates, are integrated with this new algorithm. Google now interprets search intent and context, rather than returning accurate responses to queries using user-entered keywords. The challenge for the algorithm now is to understand the essence of the search query.
Pigeon
The core of the update is geo-dependent search. Thus, the user's geographic location is a key parameter when compiling a rating. This update is closely related to Google Maps.
Mobilegeddon
This update is for mobile search. Now a higher position in the ranking will be occupied by pages that provide for mobile versions.
